Kahurangi National Park
Located in the northwest of the South Island and ranging to near Golden Bay in north, is Kahurangi National Park. This national park was created in 1996 making it one of New Zealand's newest national parks, and at 452,002 hectares it is also the second largest. Translated, its name has a number of meanings including 'treasured possession', an apt description of its wonderfully diverse natural and recreational values. more
A designated Department of Conservation (DoC) "Great Walk," the Heaphy Track traverses from Golden Bay to Karamea, over craggy ranges, alpine meadows, valleys of tropical native palms, and ruggedly beautiful coastline. A helicopter will give you a bird's eye view of this incredible landscape which includes sites filmed for The Lord of the Rings movies. Kahurangi is the home of the largest remaining population of Great Spotted Kiwi.
